How do I search for section 8 waiting lists?
Updated over a month ago

There are two ways to find open Section 8 waiting lists on AffordableHousing.com:

Method 1: Use the "Waiting Lists" Tab

  1. Go to the Homepage and click on the "Waiting List" tab.

  2. This will bring up the Open Waiting Lists page, which displays:

    • Waiting List Name – The name of the housing authority or program.

    • Status – Whether the list is open or closed.

    • Program Type – Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers or other assistance programs.

    • Online Application Availability – Indicates if applications can be submitted online.

    • Sharing Options – Allows you to share waiting list information with others.

  3. To narrow your search, click "Filter By" in the top left corner and select your desired state.

  4. Review eligibility requirements, which vary by housing agency. Some agencies provide additional details on their website or require direct contact for more information.

  5. Applying for a Waiting List:

    • If the agency does not offer an online application, click "Apply on Agency Website" to continue.

    • If an online application is available, click "Apply Now" to begin the process.

  6. When applying, a pop-up window will ask for your last name and Social Security Number (SSN):

    • If you have previously applied, enter your last name and SSN to link your existing applications.

    • If you are a first-time user, click "Skip" to start a new application.

    • Ensure that the last name and SSN match what was entered on your original Section 8 application (not just your AffordableHousing.com account).

Method 2: Search Through the "Housing Agencies" Page

  1. Go to the Homepage and click on the "Housing Agencies" tab.

  2. Use the search filters at the top of the page to refine your search by:

    • State, County, City, or Zip Code

    • Waiting List Status (Open/Closed)

    • Online Application Availability

  3. Click on a housing agency to view details about their available programs, requirements, and application process.
