How do I apply for Section 8?

Updated over 2 weeks ago

To apply for housing assistance like Section 8 or public housing, you must submit an application through a local housing agency, also called a Public Housing Authority (PHA).

AffordableHousing.com can help you find open waiting lists and housing agencies in your area.

Step-by-Step: How to Apply

1. Search for an Open Waiting List

Start by searching the AffordableHousing.com waiting list directory for housing programs that are currently accepting applications.

This page shows housing programs across the country that are currently open.

How to apply from this page

  • Find a waiting list you are interested in.

  • Click the waiting list name in the far left column of the table.

  • This will open the waiting list details page.

  • Click the “Apply Now” button.

  • Follow the instructions to submit your application.

Not all waiting lists are open all the time, so check back regularly if you do not see one available in your area.

2. Find Your Local Housing Agency

If you want to contact a PHA directly, you can search for one in the AffordableHousing.com PHA directory.

PHAs manage housing programs in their local area and can provide information about:

  • Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8)

  • Public housing

  • Local waiting lists

  • Application requirements

3. Submit an Application

When a waiting list is open, you can apply through the Housing Agency or through AffordableHousing.com.

Applications may be available:

  • Online

  • In person

  • By mail

You may need to provide information such as:

  • Identification

  • Proof of income

  • Household members

  • Contact information

4. Wait for Eligibility Review

After you apply, the housing agency reviews your application to determine if you qualify.

They may consider:

  • Household income

  • Household size

  • Citizenship or eligible immigration status

  • Local program rules

If you qualify, you will be added to the waiting list if assistance is not immediately available.

5. Join the Waiting List

Many housing programs use waiting lists because there are more applicants than available housing.

Waiting times can vary widely depending on the location.

Housing agencies will contact you when your name reaches the top of the list.

6. Receive Housing Assistance

When assistance becomes available, the Housing Agency will contact you with next steps.

You may receive:

  • A Section 8 housing voucher, or

  • Placement in a public housing unit

The agency will explain what documents you need and what happens next.

Helpful Tip

Some Housing Agencies give priority to certain applicants, such as:

  • Seniors

  • Veterans

  • People with disabilities

  • People experiencing homelessness

  • Local residents

These preferences can affect how quickly someone receives assistance.
